Fiona's story - in loving memory of Scarlett

07 Feb 2024

Life has to end, love doesn’t.

Fiona - Scarlett's mum

Scarlett Enaya Karoki was born prematurely. I had preeclampsia and Scarlett arrived at 33 weeks. She spent time in the hospital before we were told we could bring her home.

She was a gorgeous little one with a contagious smile.

Sadly, after just 6 months, Scarlet was taken to the ICU. Six days later she was pronounced dead. We were told it was SIDS.

Following her death, it was so difficult to adjust to day to day life. I struggled with so many emotions, some I could control, some I could not.

After the death of Scarlett I needed to find an outlet for my pain.  I had so many sleepless nights. Some evenings to help with this I started designing.

This helped me.

It gave me so much satisfaction that my baby's memory would live through these designs. So I started a business called Scaya Designs. Purchasers get a chance to customise their outfits with me. Each outfit has an African touch, our outfits are designed stitch by stitch with love.

Not everyone knows how to support a grieving family. If you are struggling to find the words, it is sometimes just enough to give a hug with no words. It can go a long way.

My first social post for my new business was:

‘SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The one thing no one prepares you for and you never see it coming.

Scaya Designs- something to keep our minds occupied by creating fashionable, cosy clothings.’

I often say ‘Grow through what you go through.’ I think my business is part of this.

To Scarlett’ I will never get over your smile, your touch and our morning snuggles.

I miss you my love.’

Say Their Name Day is on March 25 – a special day to remember all of the little lives we have loved and lost, and support bereaved families.
